MBSC Personal Training Mentorship Announcement

At MBSC we have had a lot of success over the past few years with our sports performance mentorship. Now, we’re pleased to announce that we’re offering a new Personal Training Mentorship run by myself and Brendon Rearick. MBSC is known for developing athletes but what many people do not know is that we do more revenue sales yearly in personal training than anything else. We’ve become very effective at assessing, programming and coaching clients in one-on-one and small group settings and would like to teach our methods to other coaches in the field. This is very exciting for both Brendon and I we would love any coaches looking to expand their knowledge to come join us.

Check out the details here…

Recently, I’ve been trying to make a blogging resurgence. I really enjoy writing and sharing my thoughts on everything health related both mental and physical. While working 60 hrs a week and in school for massage therapy in the evening at times writing takes a back seat. Needless to say, my biggest challenge has been “not having enough time” to write. I always hated that excuse but none-the-less I’ve leaned on it. I knew it was up to me to make time if it was something I truly gave a shit about. So recently, in a quest to be more productive I have discovered that HOW I work has a much bigger influence on my results than HOW MUCH TIME I have to work. Quality wins over quantity again. Go figure.

The book “The Power Of Full Engagement” was suggested to me by EWL Fitness Owner/MBSC legend Ed Lippie. This book gives some great tips on how to work smarter not harder and get more work out of your time rather than spending more time on work.

In the book I think the real key is this. Alternating periods of intense work and focus paired with periods of relaxation and disconnection. This can work in a couple different ways. Let me explain.

On the small scale you should be alternating periods of work where you concentrate intensely for periods of time from 30 minutes to an 1.5 hours with periods where you clear your brain and recharge for 5-15 mins.

In between my periods of intense work I go through a mini stretch circuit, grab a drink and get a breath of fresh air outside and then return to work. This sequence has worked great for me.

Lax Ball Roll: Glutes/Quad/Hip Flexors

SCM Self Pin and Stretch + Floor Neck Packing

T-Spine Mobility

Goblet Squat x 10 with :30 sec hold at the bottom

Go outside for a minute get fresh air, big glass of water and return to work.

In between work.

On the larger scaler you should also have periods whether it be days, weeks or months at a time where you work in alternating periods in the same fashion. An example may be this.

You work a 12-14 hour day intensely and when you come home at night you separate from your work and recharge your brain. This could be exercising, watching a movie, reading, spending time with a loved one, whatever does it for you.

For many (such as myself) it can be hard to separate from work once you are home. Realize that for the most part all this shit can wait. Make time for everything else in your life. It’s not life or death if you wait to finish that writing project till tomorrow. Also, if you are truly employing this technique you should have all these loose ends tied up before getting home at night.

The magic lies in knowing when to go hard and when to go home. No one operates like the energizer bunny and everyone needs to recharge. Think about your work, (whatever it is you do) like interval training. We want quality reps followed by complete recovery. You are better off going hard, with complete focus for 30 minutes at a time then doing unfocused/uninspired work for 2.5 hours. Just like you are better off sprinting a 1/4 mile at a time than plodding along for 2 miles.

To more productivity.

-Kevin

Whooops! No posts this week, except for this one. I’ve been crazy busy. Here is a hodge-podge of small stuff from the week..

Opening The Pecs…

Tight pecs, stiff t-spines and bad breathing patterns are like an epidemic these days. Here are some drills to loosen up and create length in the pecs. Getting better range here first will allow you some slack to mobilize the t-spine. This is best followed up with some t-spine mobility, breathing exercises and rowing work.

8 Steps To A Pain Free Back

Brendon Rearick hooked me up with this book as a kick ass X-Mas present. I just started working my way through it and it’s awesome! Often the missing piece in any rehab program is the home exercise and lifestyle correction portion. This book gives you that. Author Esther Gokhale explores cultures around the world and how their postures and habits have kept them free of back pain. She provides easy to follow home exercises and stretches and provides great examples of how daily posture can make or break the health of your spine.

7 Tips For A Happier Life

Smitty nailed it with this one. Great article to get you mentally ready for the week ahead.

http://www.dieselsc.com/you-dont-want-it-bad-enough-tips-for-a-happier-life/

Well that does it for today.
Here is a Ben Brunoesque push-up variation that I’ve been doing lately on the rings. This one is seriously tough. Just as demanding on the core as it is on the chest and shoulders. Don’t believe me try it for yourself!

Dan John wrote a great post on managing compromises. What starts as a post focused on Olympic lifting becomes a life lesson. I would expect nothing less from my “crazy uncle in the attic.”

http://danjohn.net/2012/02/the-olympic-lifts-a-study-of-compromises-to-options/

Here is a great video of Pyrros Dimas training. You have to appreciate the level of technical mastery and explosveness he demonstrates here. This is amazing to watch. On a related note, we watched a similar video of Dimas in an MBSC staff meeting a little while back. What other job will stuff like this be part of your weekly meetings! I’m so lucky to be at MBSC.
